This is Dr. Allin at the Evolve Chiropractic Woodstock location. And I’m asking, what do we all really know about health?
I have spent countless hours learning about health; lectures, textbooks, podcasts, webinars, seminars-a-plenty. The thing I realize the most is how little we actually know about how things really work.
Real Health – Not Marketing Propaganda
There are so many “health experts” out there that claim to have the biggest and best solution to all of your health problems, yet, there are just as many “health experts” that discount or discredit another’s claims. So much, back and forth, it will make your head spin.
My patients are constantly asking me what I think about this or that new supplement. They wonder if this new brace they saw on the internet will help their posture. The health consumer is constantly being bombarded with marketing and anti-marketing propaganda for health and wellness techniques.
All of my patients have something in common: They know deep down that something is not right.Something needs to change and they need help doing it.
It’s NOT About Miracle Cures
I think that instead of focusing on the next miracle cure, we need to focus on what is in front of us.
Focus on the things in our lives that we CAN change. Nutrition, hydration, exercise, stress management, time management, sense of purpose; all of these modifiable lifestyle factors are directly within our control and have the greatest opportunity to have an enormous impact on our health and well-being.
We can control what we put in our mouths, we can control when we go to bed (most of the time, I had a toddler, so I get it…), But, nothing worth doing is easy, now is it?
Excel at This One Thing
What I do know about health is that it is the one thing in our lives in which we should aim to excel.
Without our health, what do we have? Disease, suffering… Why would we not change the things in our lives that negatively impact our health, our relationships, our future? Why would we not strive to be the very best version of ourselves? To function at 100%?
I get it, life is hard. Things happen that are not in our control. But 90% of the things in our lives are within our control. So why don’t we capitalize on what we can change, and live in the moment?
Put your health first, then take on the world.
3 Challenges That Will Change Your Current State of Health:
1. Every time you put food up to your mouth ask yourself, “Why am I eating this?”
Is it to provide your body with the necessary tools to repair and heal, or is it to fill an empty void that can never be fully satisfied?
2. Every day sit upright in a comfortable chair for 5 minutes and breathe.
Focus on your breath. Feel the breath come in, feel the breath go out. Your mind will wander. When it does, kindly move your attention back to your breath. Don’t do anything else for 5 whole minutes.
3. Drink ½ of your bodyweight in ounces.
So, if you weigh 200 lbs, you need to drink 100 ounces of water per day. This need to be WATER. And no, the water in your beer doesn’t count…
Conclusion
We’re not all going to attain perfect health by the end of the week but we can take steps towards making real, lasting change. We have to remember the quality of our health is largely based on the decisions we make. So strive to use your decision-making power to create the strongest, healthiest life possible for yourself.
Then you can go take on the world.
