Spinal Decompression Therapy in Rockford, IL
When pain from a bulging or herniated disc won't let up, it's telling you there's a problem in your spine. Taking pressure off is the first step, and the technique matters.

When disc pain in your lower back or neck won't let up, it can prevent you from sitting, sleeping, driving, or working, and if surgery has been mentioned, it can be frightening. We all want the same thing: for the pain to stop, and to know whether there is a way forward without an operation.
Spinal decompression is designed to gently take pressure off an irritated disc and the nerves around it. What matters most is choosing the method that fits your spine and pairing it with care that corrects the problem that put pressure on the disc in the first place. Decompression by itself can ease the pain while the posture, curve, or movement problem that loaded the disc remains.
Evolve Chiropractic of Rockford Crossings offers three decompression methods in one office: Flexion-Distraction, spinal traction based on Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP), and Pettibon traction. Dr. Amanda Klosterman, Dr. Trevor Deppe, and Dr. Freddy Alvarez identify the underlying problem causing your pain and build a personalized care plan based on your exam findings, choosing the method, or combination of methods, that fits your spine.
From there, care moves through three phases: relieve the pain, correct the underlying problem, and maintain the health of your spine so your discs are protected going forward.

Your first visit
Your first visit begins with a consultation and health history and a thorough exam of your spine concentrating on your discs, nerves, and the areas where you feel pain, postural analysis, functional & orthopedic testing, and spinal X-rays if needed. From there, your doctor walks you through a clear & detailed report of findings, so you understand exactly what is going on, whether decompression belongs in your care, and what your options are.

Schedule an appointmentIs spinal decompression right for me?
Your exam answers that. Decompression is commonly used for herniated discs, bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, spinal stenosis, and pinched nerves in the neck or lower back. It is the wrong choice for some conditions, such as a recent fracture, advanced osteoporosis, or certain spinal surgeries, which is why your doctor examines your spine and reviews your health history before recommending it. Our decompression therapy page explains the treatment in more depth.
What are the three decompression methods at Rockford Crossings?
Flexion-Distraction, CBP spinal traction, and Pettibon traction, and your doctor chooses among them based on your exam and X-rays:
- Flexion-Distraction uses a specialized table that gently and rhythmically stretches your lower back to open the space around the disc and nerve, with no twisting.
- CBP spinal traction is set up precisely from your own X-rays to restore healthy spinal curves, taking pressure off discs and nerves over the course of your care.
- Pettibon traction is a second curve-restoring system for the neck and lower back, paired with exercises that help hold the correction.
Having all three in one office lets your doctor match the method to your spine and your findings.
How does decompression fit into my care plan?
Decompression works best as one part of a care plan built to correct the underlying problem. It takes pressure off the disc and the nerve, and the rest of your care makes that relief last, with each treatment doing a different job and making the others work better:
- Chiropractic adjustments restore proper movement to the joints of your spine around the disc.
- Physical therapy and corrective exercises strengthen and stabilize the core and neck muscles that support your spine.
- Stretch therapy keeps the muscles and soft tissue around your spine healthy.
- Massage therapy is included when your chiropractor prescribes it as part of your care plan.
- Electrical muscle stimulation and cold laser therapy reduce pain & inflammation and support tissue healing.
Care moves through three phases. Relief comes first, taking pressure off the disc and calming your pain. Correction follows, addressing the curve, posture, and movement problems that loaded the disc. Maintenance care then looks after the health of your spine over time, keeping your gains and helping protect your discs from the same problem building again.

What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit begins with a consultation and health history, followed by a thorough spinal exam, postural assessment, functional & orthopedic testing, and spinal X-rays if your doctor finds they are needed. Because spinal traction is set up from your X-rays, your doctor will tell you if imaging is needed before decompression begins. From there, your doctor walks you through a clear & detailed report of findings, so you understand what is going on with your discs, whether decompression belongs in your care, and what your best next steps are. The $21 New Patient Special covers the consultation and health history, the thorough exam, spinal X-rays if needed, and the report of findings. (Excludes Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and PI/Workers' Comp claimants.)
When is disc pain an emergency?
Disc pain is an emergency when it comes with loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or weakness in an arm or leg that is growing fast. Those signs call for emergency medical care right away, and decompression is the wrong tool for that moment. For everything short of that, Evolve Chiropractic works alongside your medical doctor and any specialist you already see, and we will tell you plainly when your exam points to something that belongs with them.

Spinal Decompression Therapy in Rockford: Questions
Does spinal decompression hurt?
Most patients find it comfortable and relaxing. Your doctor sets the stretch to what your body tolerates and adjusts it as you go, and you tell them how it feels throughout.
How many decompression sessions will I need?
Your doctor lays out a recommended number of visits in your report of findings, based on your exam and how your spine responds. Correcting a disc problem takes consistent care over several weeks.
Do I need X-rays or an MRI before spinal decompression?
X-rays often, an MRI sometimes. Spinal traction is set up from your X-rays, which are taken on site when your doctor finds they are needed, with no referral required. X-rays do not show a herniated disc, so if your doctor needs to see the disc itself, they will tell you whether an MRI is warranted, and you are welcome to bring one you already have.
What does the first visit cost?
$21 with the New Patient Special, which covers your consultation and health history, thorough spinal exam, postural assessment, functional & orthopedic testing, spinal X-rays if needed, and report of findings. Exclusions apply, including Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare.
Will my health insurance cover spinal decompression?
In addition to our affordable cash rates, we work with all major insurance providers. If you would prefer to use your insurance, we take time on your initial visit to look at your coverage and let you know exactly what it does and does not include. We take Medicare. Medicaid coverage does not include chiropractic care.
