Pinched Nerve Treatment in Rockford, IL
When pain, numbness, or tingling shoots into your arm or leg, it's telling you there's a problem in your spine, right where that nerve is most vulnerable.

When pain, burning, numbness, or pins and needles shoot into your arm, hand, leg, or foot, it can prevent you from sleeping, working at a computer, gripping a steering wheel, or standing and walking without thinking about it. Not knowing why your hand keeps going numb or your leg keeps buzzing can be scary, and we all want the same thing: for the pain, numbness or tingling to stop, and to know what caused it in the first place.
Here is what most people do not realize: where you feel the symptom is often not where the problem is. The nerves to your shoulders, arms, and hands leave your spine in your neck, and the nerves to your legs and feet leave it in your lower back. Treating the hand, shoulder, or calf where you feel it can ease the pain for a while and miss the problem in your spine completely.
At Evolve Chiropractic of Rockford Crossings, Dr. Amanda Klosterman, Dr. Trevor Deppe, and Dr. Freddy Alvarez identify the underlying problem causing your pain and build a personalized care plan based on your exam findings. Your exam traces what you are feeling back to the level of your spine it comes from, so your care is aimed at the right place from the start.
From there, care moves through three phases: relieve the pain, correct the underlying problem, and maintain the health of your spine so the nerve has room to stay healthy.

Schedule an appointmentWhere is my nerve being pinched?
A thorough exam is how your doctor finds it, and where you feel it is the first clue. Pain, numbness, or tingling in your shoulder, arm, or hand usually traces back to your neck, and in your buttock, leg, or foot it usually traces back to your lower back. When pain shoots down your leg, it is commonly called sciatica. Numbness in the hand is often blamed on the wrist, and sometimes the wrist is involved, which is why your doctor checks your neck and the full path of the nerve, as our carpal tunnel page explains.
Will a pinched nerve heal on its own?
The pain sometimes eases on its own, and the problem that caused it often stays. Nerve pain can settle with rest or medication while the joint, disc, or posture problem crowding the nerve is still there, which is why it tends to return, often in the same spot. Getting examined identifies what is pressing on the nerve so it can be corrected, and the longer numbness or weakness goes on, the more important it becomes to find out why.
How does Evolve Chiropractic treat a pinched nerve in Rockford?
Our care is effective because it starts with a thorough spinal exam that identifies which level of your spine is involved and what is crowding the nerve there. Your care plan is then built to correct that problem, based on your specific findings and personal goals, using evidence-based treatments that each do a different job and make the others work better:
- Chiropractic adjustments restore proper movement to the spinal joints around the irritated nerve.
- Spinal decompression takes pressure off the disc and the nerve, and this office offers three different methods.
- Spinal traction, based on Chiropractic BioPhysics and set up precisely from your own X-rays, corrects your spinal curves and posture to help keep open the space the nerve passes through.
- Stretch therapy eases the tight muscles along the path of the nerve.
- Physical therapy and corrective exercises strengthen and stabilize the muscles that support your neck and back.
- Cold laser therapy and electrical muscle stimulation reduce pain & inflammation and support tissue healing.

Bringing all of these together in one office lets our doctors prescribe what is needed to take pressure off the nerve and keep it off.
Care moves through three phases. Relief comes first, calming the pain, numbness, and tingling. Correction follows, addressing the problem in your spine that was crowding the nerve. Maintenance care then protects the health of your spine over time, so the improvements you made last.

What happens at my first visit?
Your first visit begins with a consultation and health history, followed by a thorough spinal exam, postural assessment, functional & orthopedic testing, and spinal X-rays if your doctor finds they are needed. From there, your doctor walks you through a clear & detailed report of findings, so you understand where the nerve is being irritated, what can be done to help, and what your best next steps are. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, review your options, and make the decision that is right for you. The $21 New Patient Special covers the consultation and health history, the thorough exam, spinal X-rays if needed, and the report of findings. (Excludes Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and PI/Workers' Comp claimants.)
When is a pinched nerve an emergency?
It is an emergency when you lose bladder or bowel control, have numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or have numbness or weakness that spreads fast. Sudden weakness on one side of the body with a severe headache, trouble speaking, or a drooping face are signs of a stroke. Any of these calls for emergency medical care right away. A foot that catches on the floor or a hand that keeps dropping things are reasons to be examined soon. For everything short of an emergency, Evolve Chiropractic works alongside your medical doctor, and we will tell you plainly when your exam points to something that belongs with them.

Pinched Nerve Treatment in Rockford: Questions
Is a pinched nerve the same as sciatica?
Sciatica is one type of pinched nerve. The nerve roots in your lower back that form the sciatic nerve are irritated, and pain shoots down your leg. A pinched nerve in your neck sends pain, numbness, or tingling into your shoulder, arm, and hand instead.
Can a pinched nerve in my neck cause numbness in my hand?
Yes. The nerves that supply your shoulder, arm, and hand leave your spine in your neck, so a problem there can cause numbness or tingling in your fingers. Your doctor examines your neck and your wrist, so your care goes where the problem is.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI for a pinched nerve?
Sometimes. Your doctor decides after your spinal exam and functional & orthopedic testing, and spinal X-rays are taken on site when they are needed, with no referral required. X-rays show the alignment of your spine and the spacing between your vertebrae. They do not show a herniated disc or the nerve itself, which takes an MRI, and your doctor will tell you if one is warranted.
What does the first visit cost?
$21 with the New Patient Special, which covers your consultation and health history, thorough spinal exam, postural assessment, functional & orthopedic testing, spinal X-rays if needed, and report of findings. Exclusions apply, including Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare.
Will my health insurance cover pinched nerve care?
In addition to our affordable cash rates, we work with all major insurance providers. If you would prefer to use your insurance, we take time on your initial visit to look at your coverage and let you know exactly what it does and does not include. We take Medicare. Medicaid coverage does not include chiropractic care.
